Garden of Remembrance & Reflection Initiative

Garden of Remembrance & Reflection Initiative designed by Landscape Artist Diarmuid Gavin may be of interest to your constituents

Tidy Towns “under this initiative, groups may be in a position to gain points within the competition”

A chara,

Please find attached a brochure for the Gardens of Remembrance and Reflection initiative, you may remember in 2016 many counties, towns and parishes installed Gardens of Remembrance. Following on from this very successful initiative, and as we continue our decade of commemorations, I am again working alongside landscape artist Diarmuid Gavin, with the support of the Minister for State Pippa Hackett and all the leaders of the groupings in Seanad Eireann.  This initiative may be of interest to Tidy Towns or community groups in your area.

I have attached a letter from the Department of Rural and Community Development, Tidy Towns Unit which states under this initiative groups may be able to gain points within the competition.

I also included a letter from Diarmuid Gavin, who has designed 7 template gardens. These may be named after women involved in the journey for independence. The garden designs can be replicated, altered or amended in any way you deem fit or indeed a completely different design can be used depending on the location.

All these Gardens of Remembrance and Reflection should have three core elements in common;

·       A replica of the 1916 proclamation

·       A flagpole for the tricolour

·       Seven trees which represent the Seven Signatories of the Proclamation

In his letter, Diarmuid has included advice in relation to suitable trees for any size garden which may be of assistance to you. As many people were involved in the journey for independence a century ago, it would be appropriate that the proclamation alone would be the only inscribed words in these gardens.

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media have clarified that “Under Section 5(f), on pages 9/10, we provide guidelines to assist local authorities who wish to develop or support initiatives relating to the planting of commemorative trees or gardens, and related activities.  In the guidelines, we recommend that information panels, rather than plaques, are used to inform the public about the meaning and significance of the projects funded. We would like to clarify, however, for local authorities, Tidy Towns Committees or other interested community organisations, who would like to participate in the Garden of Remembrance and Reflection initiative, that they may include an engraved replica of the 1916 Proclamation in their garden designs, if they wish to do so.  The engraving should be confined to the wording of the 1916 Proclamation and no additional text should be added.”

If a Garden of Remembrance was not installed in your area as part of the 1916 Centenary commemorations, you might consider installing a Garden of Remembrance and Reflection this year. Communities who have installed a garden may wish to officially dedicate or rededicate their gardens on the 11th of July this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the truce during the War of Independence.

All involvement in this initiative should be done in full compliance with the latest public health advice and guidelines. If you have any questions or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
